Lottery is a low-odds game of chance, often run by state or federal governments, in which winners are selected by a random drawing. In general, Lottery is used as a term to refer to any type of game in which numbers are drawn at random and prizes are awarded to the holders of those numbers. However, the word is often used to describe a state or national lottery, where the prize is cash, goods, or services.<\/p>\n

The first recorded use of Lottery dates back to the 15th century, when it was used in the Low Countries to raise money for town fortifications. In the 17th century, private lotteries were common in England and America as a means of raising money for a variety of purposes. Public lotteries were also a key source of financing for many American colleges, including Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, and William and Mary.<\/p>\n
